Greek Musical Instruments

Greek instruments didn’t have the same “exotic” Eastern sound as Indian instruments, they had more conventionally harmonious instruments, like harps and pipes. They also played the kithara, which was a type of early guitar, and the lyre, a simple instrument with a turtle-shell soundbox and animal-sinew strings.

The Greek harp.

These are Greek pipes.

This is a kithara.

This is a lyre, notice the turtle shell.

A fragment of music by Homer.
